Bindweefsel

Terra Terra

The participatory project ‘Bindweefsel’ brought together sixteen women from Tilburg with diverse cultural backgrounds in 2025, working in the TextielLab and the TextielStudio spaces of the TextielMuseum. What connected them was the city of Tilburg and a shared love of textiles. In co-creation with artist Sandim Mendes, they developed ‘Terra Terra’.

During the creative process, participants learned various passementerie techniques and translated personal stories and cultural traditions into textile collages. Central to the installation are cassava roots, referencing Mendes’ Cape Verdean heritage and the importance of connection to land and culture. ‘Terra Terra’ invites visitors to engage in conversations about roots, identity, and what they wish to pass on to future generations.

The installation will travel to community centres across Tilburg from January to April 2026 and will be on display at the TextielMuseum from September 2026, after which it will be added to the museum collection.
